Too scared to be alone?

I have been single for a majority of my adulthood and I have embraced being single in the fact I don’t have any ties, I can go out when I want with who I want and run amok. Yes, it would be nice to have a relationship and be in love but I’m not going to lose sleep knowing that I don’t have a partner.

I’d like to think that we have come along in time and accepted that it is ok for a 20 something, 30 something or even 40 something to be single and able to play the field. Of course, there are other commitments in our lives that keep us busy – work, friends, family, exercise, SHOPPING!!!

However, there a number of women and men that couldn’t possibly live the single life and have one relationship after another – and unfortunately, these relationships continue to fail. Why then with such exposure to shows like Sex and the City which teach us that it is okay to be single, that today’s women and men are too scared to be alone?

A work colleague of mine who is only 23 has just broken up with her boyfriend of 2 years. She admitted that she has actually been unhappy in this relationship for sometime but she feared of being alone that she continued to stay in the relationship. Finally, she decided that she wasn’t happy and she broke up with her boyfriend.

This was a great opportunity for her to have a ‘gap’ year or a time of singlehood – a good chance to finder herself, spend time with her friends, meet a number of new men and most importantly have fun without the stress of a relationship.

Much to my surprise, this colleague pashed a bloke at the pub the night after the break up and immediately decided that he was the one and is now in a relationship with him.

This is starting to become a common trend in some women and men – that they can’t possibly be alone and need to be in a relationship or they’re not happy. To put it bluntly, this is a cop out and it usually comes down to self esteem in the fact that the woman or man is so unhappy with who s/he is as a person that s/he needs a partner to make them happy. But remember the good old saying ‘you have to be happy with yourself, before you’re happy with someone else.’ Well, I hate to say it, but it’s true because if you’re not happy, you’ll continue to have these failing relationships.

If you do find that you’re single, enjoy it because it’s not going to last forever. Eventually you will fall in love, and then you’ll have to start putting up with all their bad habits, their family, answering to your partner about your whereabouts and enjoying the rollercoaster ride of a partnership.

After a relationship is broken, relax, take a deep breath and tell yourself that you’ll be just fine on your own. You have your family, your friends and a million adventures of getting out and about again meeting lots of fabulous and interesting men or women.

To singlehood – cheers!

Oh Hail The Purple Patch

The girls and I hit the town for a night of cocktails on the weekend – maybe too many cocktails. Throughout the evening I got an array of text messages for young lads who wanted to meet up with me that night – don’t you just love hearing from blokes, only when they’re out drinking with their mates and all they want is a booty call???

Being the big flirt that I am, I text back… to all 5 blokes! Eek – my bad? I reached over to my girlfriends and questioned ‘Is playing 5 guys at the one time… a bad thing?’ After a few raised eyebrows and gasps my friend Rachel exclaimed ‘Hell no darling… you’re just having a purple patch!’

A purple patch? A new term which is very new to me but apparently very common in the dating world. It’s a period of time in which is opposite to a drought- it’s raining men girlfriends and there’s nothing wrong with that!!!

It occurred to me that I have had a couple of purple patches. When my ex and I broke up, I went on a bit of a rampage. I hit the gym, got a new wardrobe and felt great! Each weekend the gals and I headed out to the best bars in town – not in the event to find men, but to go dancing and have fun.

Funny thing was – when I wasn’t even remotely interested in men, a lot of men started to become interested in me!!! Why? Maybe because I wasn’t giving off that desperate vibe! Before I knew it, I had 7 guys going at the same time – not intimate with any of them, more companions who I would go out to dinner or the movies with!

!
Now, god bless the purple patch but do be careful – having too many guys going at the same time could lead to a little confusion… you may forget who you’re suppose to be dating that night or in my case you may mix up their names – not good form on my behalf

Although some may look down at the purple patch in that it could all end in tears and someone getting hurt – I say what’s the harm? It’s not only great for your self confidence but you get to spend time with a variety of different and fun people!

RIDDLE ME THIS: IS THE 'PURPLE PATCH' A GOOD THING OR COULD IT BE A DATING TREND THAT ENDS IN TEARS?

The Male Hang Out: The Toilet?

From an early age, it fascinated me why my Dad would be the first to get up, grab the paper and escape to the toilet. I always wondered what on earth he would do in their for a good 15 – 20 mins, even if it was to read the paper. Couldn’t he read it at the dining table or in the comfort of his recliner?

Funerals - The New Place to Pick Up?

A friend of mine, Stacey recently went to a funeral of an ex lover's. He died tragically and even though Stacey and her lover ended on bad terms she still felt compelled to attend the funeral.

Although funeral's aren't the most enjoyable events, Stacey did however manage to see the positive side of it all.

Players or Cowards?

“Don’t you know who I am?”

Well of course not. What a stupid question! I had only met this guy once before and even then we talked for all of 10 minutes - how on earth did I know who he was?

HOT NEW PLACES TO DATE

Gone are the days of picking up at the local pub or hooking up with a friend’s mate – if we want to find the love of our lives, we need to start thinking outside the boring old dating square. As a seriously single Melbourne girl who’s done dating to death and come up with a big fat zero, I decided it was time to find out where all the hot single men and women are hiding.

BINGO
