Soul mates - do they really exist?
It really does puzzle me sometimes how people can be in relationships - be they married or defacto, and then when the relationship ends (death, unfaithfulness, growing apart etc) some people move on extremely quickly.
Now, we all know there are the types of people who just aren't happy with single life and always have to be in a relationship, and I'm sure you're all familiar with the term 'rebound'.
But I mean jumping straight back into completely committed relationships or marriages. Hang on - weren't they already married to the love of their life? Or was their previous other half just the love of their life at the time? Is there only one person that we are truly meant to be with?
I come from a family where my parents have been married for 35 years and my grandparents even made the big 6-0. I'm lucky, not everyone grows up in such stable families (not that unstable families are necessarily a bad thing, but hopefully you know what I'm getting at here!). But out of all the family friends we knew growing up, many have split. Of my extended family there have been numerous divorces and splits over the years. Some have found love again, others haven't. But maybe that's the point - is it just love, as opposed to TRUE love?
What if you think it is true love, and then split up years down the track. Does that mean it wasn't true love, or it was just true love at the time? And if you are lucky enough to find love - or 'true' love - again, does that mean you didn't really, honestly, TRULY love the person before, or does it just add more weight to the argument that you can love more than one person at once, and love everyone differently?
And if that's the case, then how the heck are you supposed to know if it's the real thing or not?
