Do women have to be attractive to be successful at sport?
An ariticle on this week on News.Com (www.news.com.au) questioned whether to be a successful female athlete, you had to be attractive! And the results – yes, you did!
This somewhat angered me – when did sport turn into the catwalk?
Obviously with the likes of Anna Kournakova and Maria Sharapova – getting marketing sponsorship is to their advantage as they have a great look for media – but does this make them better sportswomen than say Martina Hingis or a Steffi Graf?
Surely with the downfall of Anna Kournakova we can’t say she was too successful? She would hardly ever win a game in her matches but yet she is stil printed in all our trash mags. Perhaps she’s more successful in the men that she dates (Enrique Inglesis) and how many magazines she can get her head more than her sporting ability.
I think success is sport should come down to that alone – how good you are at the sport? How many championships or premierships you have won – more than how much money you have made in sponsorship dollars because you have become the face of a brand!
It also somewhat angers me that men only go to female tennis or sporting events to check out the scenery! The last time I saw Anna Kournkova play, the majority of the crowd were men and they were all there for one thing – too see if they could get a sneak peak of what was under he skirt! Okay I’d admit, there wasn’t anything else really to watch for as they tennis was so bad!
But my point being is why then, is female sport not taken seriously? Why is it about sex, or what they look like in their uniforms? When did it start being about attractiveness than sporting ability?
