Date Gal - Love, Sex and Relationships

What's the Attraction of the Footballer?

Of course, a BIG weekend of footy grand finals - both Rugby and AFL!!! Go Swannies and Go the Storm!

This week I have been working with a lot of AFL footy players leading up to the Grand Final and as nice as they were (and to look at), I couldn't work out why there were so many women dolling themselves all over the players!

I've dated an AFL player before and tell you the truth they are no different to any other man. They just have a glamourous kind of job - that's it! They have bad habits, they have bad hair days, they can be rude but they also can be very sweet.

When I dated Mr AFL and we would go out, it never ceased to amaze me how many girls would flirt with him or slip him their numbers when clearly they knew I was his girlfriend. Wouldn't stop them though!

Somehow his number got out and he would get phone calls at all hours of the night and at one point he was being stalked.

In the end, our lives were very different and I couldn't compete with the endless number of girls always trying to win his heart - and well eventually it did work with one girl.

My point is - what's the attraction? If they're no different to the bloke next door, why do women constantly try to jump into bed with them? So what - they play sport - it's their job! It doesn't make them any more attractive does it?

As a sports journo myself, curious what work were you doing with the AFL players Date Gal? With regards to your post I think a lot of them are attracted to them obviously physically cos you know they are always going to be in shape, and some women, not all I guess like the prestige, of dating a footballer, with it be AFL, NRL or otherwise

Ah that is a mystery what I do!!!

Yes they'e in shape but what happens when they stop playing footy - will they let themselves go? Look at Geelong's Billy Brownless - he he!

And prestiege? Pleaseeeee - you'll only be known as so and so's handbag!!!
3. September 30th 2006 @ 00:09. TonyK Says:
Yea, that prestige part, the way I meant it was for the more shallow women who only care about those sort of things and the material things in life. Totally agree about Billy Brownless The AFL umpires do pretty well for themselves as well apparently, if you heard what Peter Everitt said on before the game last night
4. September 30th 2006 @ 00:14. Date Gal Says:
Yes - I think the umpires are underrated! I am sure they would do well for themselves!

But would a pick up line of 'I'm an AFL umpire' really work? Think they would be booed away!
5. September 30th 2006 @ 00:17. TonyK Says:
Haha, maybe. But at least they cant be called white maggots anymore, lol.

So whos your tip for the big one?

Im and Eagles man My heart says the Eagles but my head is not so sure, I think it will be another classic grand final.

Dont really care as much about the NRL, but go Storm.

I think your being overly technical and harsh there Homer, he was an AFL player if u read her comment and also I think Dategal is entitled to write whatever she likes, she isnt obligated to divulge things. Its her life

Interesting post but the back ground makes it very hard to read.

I think AFL players hold a similar attraction to movie stars... they're involved in massive public events where they are often represented as heroes.

AFL players are also 'the best' at playing AFL, and in the words of 'The Tao of Steve', women love excellence...

Great comment Cibbuano - yes we seem to hold those who are public figures in high regard!

Yet they are only human just like you and I - just have different types of jobs!!!

And yes we do love excellence - but we do like flaws too so we know that they're human

They are usually fine physical specimens, but often have big egos and struggle to hold conversations on topics outside their sport. This is what I have decided based on my frequent encounters with top rugby players.

Thanks Social Commentator - a majority are just as you describe them!!! Fame - gone to their head!!! It's always nice to remember where you started hey!

Yes Women love excellence and I agree whole heartedly with Cibbuano, that it is the same deal as with actors. It's so easy to have a cruch on a footballer or a rockstar because they are broadcasted all over the place - Mr Bloke next door barely gets even half that publicity so people don't even know him to chase him - let alone stalk him.

SO I guess atraction is the popularity and the excellence - you know when a man is very driven and good at what he does I find it extremely sexy.

As for having dated a footballer, I have also done that but not the televised celebrity kind , just the step down from that. It meant he was uber popular in our social scene and there were more women than average after him. It does suck but I chose to ignore it - I guess you have to believe that you're better than all that hype. After all if you want to be with someone who's in the limelight there will always be the 'darker' less attractive side of the relationship.

Thanks Vixter - excellent comments
Nice to share the same experience and how you dealt with it! It's all experience hey!

No probs - I always like to hear what poeple have to say about dating...things are the same but then not the same - each experience has its quirk.
