Don't Go There Girlfriend!
Over your dating years, you will come to realise that their are things in your man's life that you just can't and should not compete with. Even if you try to compete with the loves of his lives - you may just find that you come off second best every time.
So what are these loves and how do you deal with them?
1) SPORT: Sport is embedded in the male mind and body. It's something their born with and if we try to take it away from them, we mays well be burned at the stake. Even if you don't like sport, try for your man's sake to embrace it. Saying this, don't let you entire weekend be taken up for sport. Instead, come to a compromise. For every hour of sport he watched, you have an hour of doing what you want together. Another way to combat his sporting obsession, is to find something you love and go and do that while is occupied. Shopping, a few wines with friends, shopping, roller blading, shopping.....
2) HIS FRIENDS: You know the saying 'friends are forever... boys or gals come and go.' This is never so true but in this case. His mates are his mates and they always will be. No girl no matter who she is will come between their friendship. And that's how you should view your friendship with your girlfriends too. It's important then to accept and respect his friends and give him that time to bond with them. This bonding time is a good chance to have to ego boosted, talk to the lads about things he can't talk about with you and just be plain 10 year olds again. If he is forever spending time with his friends, perhaps ask if you can join them occasionally - bring some girlfriends along to keep you entertained. Or alternatively, have a party at your place and invite the whole crew - what better way to get to know you than a social atmosphere!
3) HIS MOTHER: This is the one love of his life you should never battle. Mothers have incredible swaying power over their sons and if they don't warm to you, don't worry he'll know about it straight away. The truth is, she's probably threatened by you - this is her pride and joy, she's always looked after him and now you want to take over this role. It's important to make her realise that she is his mother and always will be. Make her feel that she is the rock in his world, not you! Showing an interest in her will help - perhaps having lunch or coffee occasionally or asking her for advice. Just be thankful that your man has such a loving mother and they have a great relationship.
4) WORK: This is a difficult one. Work is his home away from home. He spends a majority of his life there and obviously is very passionate about it. We all know at times work can be difficult and at stressful times, we take it out on our loved ones. If you have a basic understanding of the dynamics of his work than you can help him with his stress. The best way is when you see him or he comes home, divert his attention from work. Cook him dinner, go to the movies, hit the bedroom - anything to get his mind off work!
